Instrumentation – The Great Quadrant: Day 3

Previously, we rough cut the beams for the lattice. Today’s goal was to get them notched and assembled. To do so, we used a special blade for the table saw that cut wide chunks out instead of a narrow line.

The blade was actually composed of several individual blades with small spacers between which left some unevenness that had to be filed out.

Unfortunately the cut wasn’t quite deep enough. When we put things together, they stuck up by about $\frac{1}{16}$ of an inch so we sent them all back through again to clean them up.

When laid out on the full scale diagram, the ended up lining up quite well.

To affix, where corners met (like shown above) they were screwed together. The notches had outdoor wood glue applied.

This was all done on a table we checked to be very close to level and 2×4″s were laid across the pieces and clamped into place to press them into the table.

Those dry overnight and tomorrow we’ll start working on aligning the arcs for the scale.
