Instrumentation – The Great Quadrant: Day 2

From the full scale plans we started cutting out pieces today.

First we cut out the arcs which will hold the scale. As noted previously, the idea was to have several to choose from so we could see which had the smoothest arc. If nothing else, it just reduced the amount of plywood we had laid out.

From there, we took several 2×4’s and cut them down to 1.5″x1.5″ to make up the latticework.

We then roughly measured the length each should be and cut them a bit long. This allowed us to lay the pieces directly on the pattern to get everything lined up. The lower set we screwed to the plywood to give a firm foundation so that when we lay the second set atop them we could clamp those down without anything moving.

Once everything was in place, we marked on each piece where the crossing points were so we know where to cut the notches to allow them to interlock properly, as well as exactly where the end points should be.

So next time, we get together, we’ll cut those notches and start assembling it!
