Sexism in Anime

It has been said that "art imitates life". Taking this to be the case, we analyze what sexism is. The panel begins by explaining the events in my background that led me to realize the presence of sexism in our cultures and then explores the characteristics that perpetuate a culture of gender inequality. To highlight these factors, I examine Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, a 2007 anime that is frequently ranked highly among best anime of all time. Having demonstrated that these patriarchal elements are generally present in this popular series, I explore the effects that gender imbalances have on women both in America and Japan.
